The dopamine-serotonin dynamic creates a particularly vicious civilizational trap. Dopamine, the molecule of anticipation and reward, is being systematically exploited by what might be called 'slot-machine capitalism' — systems engineered to maximize the magic of maybe, that 50% uncertainty window where, as Robert Sapolsky's research shows, dopamine firing is at its absolute peak. Every notification, every swipe, every algorithmic feed is tuned to that uncertainty interval. The result is that we feel better — more stimulated, more engaged — but we actually behave worse, making shorter-term decisions, perceiving false patterns and meaning in unconnected events, a phenomenon called apophenia. Meanwhile, chronic stress from status loss and economic precarity depletes serotonin, which pushes behavior toward present-focus and revenge-spiked reactivity. These two dynamics compound each other into a feedback loop: a population simultaneously over-stimulated by dopamine and under-resourced in serotonin is one that is neurochemically primed for tribalism, short-termism, and radicalization. The tragedy is that this isn't a moral failing — it's a biological vulnerability being deliberately exploited at scale. Any serious response to our civilizational predicament has to grapple with the fact that the attentional and emotional substrate of the citizenry is being actively degraded by the very economic systems we're trying to reform.

The history of civilization has a hidden underground current running through it — a multi-thousand-year game of cat and mouse between what Jamie Wheal calls the Prometheans and the priests. The Prometheans are the lightbringers, the rebels, the ones who kept reaching for non-ordinary states of consciousness as a way to seed culture, spark innovation, and renew meaning — from the Eleusinian Mysteries in ancient Greece, through the psychedelic experiments of the 1960s, through MK-Ultra, through Burning Man, through the contemporary neuroscience and psychedelic renaissance. And arrayed against them, in every era, have been the institutional authorities — whether in black cassocks or black suits — working to suppress, marginalize, or co-opt those tools. The thesis that emerges from this long view is that non-ordinary states are not a fringe curiosity or a form of hedonism — they are a foundational technology of human civilization, repeatedly rediscovered and repeatedly suppressed. The strategic implication for our current moment is that the only way to prevent these tools from being shut down again by institutional authority is to open-source them — to make techniques of ecstasy, as Mircea Eliade called them, available to all humans rather than gatekept by any elite. Because if access is decentralized, no single authority can extinguish the flame.

Culture is upstream of politics, but biology is upstream of them both. We've been on this multi-century project, really accelerating since Descartes and the Enlightenment, to separate ourselves from our animal natures — to insist that it's all about cogitation, that we have infinite agency and choice, that we've somehow transcended our heritage as, in Jamie's words, 'monkeys with clothes.' But when you actually look at how we operate — the tribalism, the role of oxytocin not just as a trust molecule but as an ethnocentric bonding agent, the mate selection dynamics, the in-group/out-group biases — the honest conclusion is staggering: remarkably little of human behavior is uniquely and distinctly 'human' in the way we flatter ourselves to believe. Most of it is governed by predictable primate encoding. And this matters enormously for how we think about our civilizational predicament. We don't primarily face an environmental problem or an energy problem or an economic problem — we face a mismatch between stone-age minds and a hyper-modern culture. The levers of politics and policy operate downstream of culture, and culture itself operates downstream of deep biological imperatives around status, belonging, reward, and threat. Until we reckon honestly with that layering — biology first, then culture, then politics — our interventions will keep missing the actual root system of the problems we're trying to solve.

One of the most urgent and heartbreaking observations about our current moment is that our efforts to create group coherence — to move beyond Game A toward something more adequate — are failing in deeply predictable ways. Transformational culture, the broad ecosystem of people trying to build new forms of collective intelligence and collective sense-making, keeps running off the road at exactly the same places where the skid marks already are. The countercultural movements of the last half-century — the boomer generation, the hippie moment, the new age — made a set of characteristic errors. And rather than learning from those errors and making newer, better, more generative mistakes, we are largely repeating them. The rate limiters, the Achilles' heels, the missing links that prevent us from actually failing forward — from making progress rather than just cycling through the same collapse patterns — remain unidentified and unaddressed. This is not a peripheral concern. The complexity of the existential problems we face is genuinely beyond what any single mind can hold. These are wicked, complex problems that cannot be solved by individual horsepower operating in rivalrous competition. They require a higher form of collective intelligence and collective sense-making. And yet the very attempts to build that collective intelligence keep reproducing the dysfunctions they were meant to transcend. Understanding what those structural failure modes are — what makes group coherence so unstable, what causes well-intentioned collective efforts to implode or calcify — is therefore not just academically interesting. It is one of the most practically urgent questions of our time.

There is a profound and underappreciated historical arc to the crisis we now face, and it runs through what we might call the Dunbar coherence and the emergence of Game A. Somewhere around the upper paleolithic transition, human beings developed something genuinely new: culture. A form of group coherence that allowed humans to coordinate, to embody models of other people's inner states, to track the combinatorial web of relationships within a community — and this made humans extraordinarily effective. They spread across the entire globe, filled every ecological niche, became the apex predator everywhere they went. But this Dunbar coherence had a hard ceiling: it couldn't scale beyond roughly 150 people. And eventually, humans ran into other humans. Population rose beyond the carrying capacity of local environments, real scarcity emerged, and groups began competing with each other. This created an evolutionary pressure to find a new solution — a way to get people to work together effectively at scale. That solution is what we call Game A. Game A solved three problems simultaneously: how do you sustain a large group in relationship to nature, how do you prevent it from collapsing from internal defection and corruption, and how do you generate enough collective power to compete with other groups? The answer Game A arrived at was formal structure — money, law, hierarchy, semantic narratives that could be written down, taught, simplified, and repeated. These are computational actuations that reduce the complexity of human relationships into manageable inputs and outputs. Everything from the Ming Dynasty to Rome to the 21st century United States is a variation on this theme. They are all inside the possibility space of Game A. And now we are at the edge of that possibility space — facing problems that Game A, by its very architecture, cannot solve.

Sense-making is not merely an intellectual exercise — it is the foundational act of orienting oneself in reality in order to make meaningful choices. What draws us to this question is something very deep: we have the experience of having choice, and we are trying to figure out how to orient that choice. Sense-making, then, is about exploring what is real, because what is meaningful is bound to what is real. If you don't have an accurate map of reality, your choices — no matter how well-intentioned — will be systematically misaligned with what you actually care about. This is why sense-making is not just important but central. It is the prerequisite to everything else. Before you can act wisely, before you can build anything that works, before you can solve any problem that actually matters, you have to be able to answer: What is real? What is my relationship to reality? And what is fundamentally meaningful as a basis for how I orient my choices? Without that foundation, all planning, all strategy, all collective effort is built on sand. And this is precisely why the question of sense-making together is ultimately a question of how do I make better choices — and how do I and you become a we who make better choices — in a way that is truly responsive to the environment we actually find ourselves in.
